NANAIMO — No reported injuries, but considerable flames and smoke resulted from an evening house fire

Calls to 911 came in just before 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, reporting a home in the 400 block of Eighth St., near Bruce Ave., was fully engulfed in flames.

Capt. Orphee Bernard told NanaimoNewsNOW on scene one person was home at the time of the fire, but two people live in the home.

“We could see a fully involved house from probably two or three blocks away. We rolled up on scene and the…back side of the house was fully involved, there were flames coming out of the doors and windows and the roof.”

Damage in the home appeared contained to the back of the home, along with the roof. A garage on the property also sustained fire and smoke damage.

Bernard added the lone occupant of the home got out safely and did not require any medical treatment.

A cat was also in the house at the time and was briefly missing, however it was later found and is in the care of neighbours, who Bernard said were related to the occupants of the house on fire.

The cause of the fire is unclear and Nanaimo Fire Rescue investigators will be on scene Thursday combing over the wreckage.

Four engines and 17 firefighters were dispatched and worked the scene.

A child in the care of a neighbour first saw flames and alerted their caregiver, who first called 911.
