Long desired community park coming to Cassidy

NANAIMO —Cassidy’s first community park is within reach following the purchase of a Hallberg Rd. property.

The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) announced the nearly half-acre lot at 3483 Hallberg Rd. bought for $420,000, which Area A director Jessica Stanley said is an important breakthrough for local residents.

“Finally, family members and community members will have a place where they can play and connect with one another, it’s a long time coming for Cassidy,” Stanley told NanaimoNewsNOW.

She said creating a community park is a big step forward for the Cassidy community, however other potential sites weren’t suitable including properties near the Trans-Canada Hwy.

“We finally got a good piece of land that we could acquire and then turn that into a community park.”

Located in the heart of the Cassidy, home to around 1,000 people, the RDN will arrange to clear the existing buildings on the property to prepare for the park’s development.

Electoral Area A funds were used to buy the lot and will be be allocated to landscape and develop park amenities, an RDN news release stated.

The park’s operations and maintenance will be managed by RDN parks staff through the development of a community park budget.

The RDN expects to share information this fall regarding public input to help guide the park’s design.
