Clippers win 4-2 over Grizzlies on Teddy Bear Toss night

Dec 9, 2023 | 10:13 PM

NANAIMO — The Clippers wrapped up their 2023 home ice schedule with a 4-2 triumph over Victoria.

After going down 1-0 on a power play goal by Chase Pirtle, Cole Lonsdale scored the Teddy Bear Toss marker on a Clipper man advantage.

The goal stopped the game while fans threw stuffed toys onto the ice which will be given to children in need in the community.

Victoria went ahead in the final minute of the opening period on a one time shot by Nathan King but the Clippers slammed the door from there.

Just nine seconds into the middle frame Gabriel Westling tied the game.

Before the period was three minutes old Noah Alvarez put Nanaimo ahead to stay.

His goal stood up to be the winner and he finished with a goal and two assists.

Goalies Tyler Hodges of the Clippers and Owen Bresson at the other end were stingy the rest of the way.

The only other goal was a shorthanded tally by Nanaimo’s Luke Buss early in the third period.

The final shots were 33-24 for the Grizzlies with Victoria going 2/7 on the play and Nanaimo finishing 1/5.

The win was Nanaimo’s third in a row as they hit the road for games in Coquitlam, Langley and Merritt before the Christmas break.

At the conclusion of play on Dec. 9 the Clippers were one point behind third place Victoria in the Coastal Division standings and two points back of second place Alberni Valley.
