‘Numbers are down:’ Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival cancelled

NANAIMO — This year’s Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival, scheduled for July 11-12, has been cancelled, with organizers citing a lack of paddlers to put on the event.

Organizers say while they had teams registered from the Mainland, Alberta, and even the United States, an increase in similar events being hosted at home have stretched Vancouver Island teams thin.

Operations manager Holly Wylie said changes in other festival dates this year meant racers had to pick their spots, with not enough of the 20-person teams opting to head to Nanaimo for the event in operation since 2003.

“The paddling numbers are down, but it’s teams that are down as well. A lot of teams over the years have folded…and with the way that the economy is and the price of things, people are having to be more mindful of where their dollars are going, and it’s not to recreation.”

Wylie is the head coach of the Nanaimo Paddling Centre, which stages the Dragon Boat Festival.

Cancelled behind the scenes in the absence of a public announcement, Wylie said racers and affected stakeholders were notified six weeks ago that the festival wasn’t happening this summer.

Wylie said dragon boat events have grown over the years at a time when it’s challenging to find competitors.

“We were one of the first ones, Victoria being the first, and Nanaimo was the second one…and then what’s happened is every town club has decided that they would put on their own events, which have taken away from the major events.”

Wylie said they are committed to hosting a Dragon Boat Festival in Nanaimo next year, adding what’s required now is dedicated board members for the event.

“We will be moving forward, because I’m not ready to let it go. I’ve been involved since the very first one, and in put 2003 that’s when I got involved in dragon boating, and I’m not willing to let my hometown festival die.”

The 2024 Dragon Boat Festival was relocated to Victoria as a cost-cutting measure.

Since it’s inception, the Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival has been a key source of companionship for cancer survivors, raised well over $500,000 to regional healthcare initiatives, and generated local economic activity as part of the Harbour City’s summer events season.
