‘I’m thinking of you:’ Shoebox Project to help those living on Nanaimo streets

NANAIMO — Before you throw out the old shoebox in your closet, you might want to consider using it for someone in need.

The Shoebox Project for Women is an international effort to fill a shoebox full of useful women-centered items for those experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of becoming unhoused.

Local coordinator Laura Kelsey said items such as high-quality toiletries, winter wear, and other small gifts can be included, along with a message from the heart.

“An encouraging note. We find those are just as special as something that is a material item. A note just saying ‘I’m thinking of you’, something encouraging.”

From now until Dec. 12, shoeboxes can be dropped off at the Nanaimo North Town Centre administration office (4750 Rutherford Rd.), Thrifty Foods at Port Place Shopping Centre (650 Terminal Ave.), CurVa-Voom (1925 Bowen Rd.), and Serge & Sew (6750 N. Island Hwy).

Kelsey said each box should contain around $50 worth of items. Gift cards are also recommended, for places that are easily accessible by foot or public transit.

Donations will be distributed to the Island Crisis Care Society for their shelter program residents as well as Risebridge (520 Prideaux St.), who are currently running Nanaimo’s only warming centre.

While the Shoebox Project was originally aimed at helping women, Kelsey said this year they are also accepting gender-inclusive shoeboxes.

“You just have to make sure to add a little label on top or something, then we’ll be putting a sticker on them to say it’s a gender-neutral box, and those can be given to people who identify as women or don’t, and it’ll make sure the gifts get out to more people as well.”
