QUALICUM BEACH — Increased pedestrian access and a new space for community events are part of a now completed update in town.

Phase 2 of the East Village Revitalization was officially opened on Thursday, Aug. 24, bringing an end to a project which overhauled the look and feel of the area, while making it safer and more attractive for both residents and visitors.

New roadwork along Second Ave. East, paving, lights, landscaping and more highlighted the project, which also saw improved accessibility for all users.

“Second Avenue East was also designed to provide opportunities for community gatherings,” a release from the Town read. “There are multiple servicing kiosks, equipped with power to accommodate mobile vendors and community events.”

Retractable street control devices will also help mobile vendors and event traffic be able to more effectively use the space.

Work continues on a 72-unit housing and commercial complex in the area, which will tie into existing design elements and recent upgrades.

Envisioned for years, the new East Village has been described as “a new face, a new evolution” by Town staff in the past.

Phase one was completed in late 2022.
