QUALICUM BEACH — The tender for continued upgrades to the East Village area of the town’s downtown has been awarded.

Milestone Equipment Contracting Ltd. won the project, submitting the low bid of $1.83 million and beating out four other contractors looking to secure the bid.

The beautification project will add to work already done in the area, with a section along Berwick Rd. already upgraded.

“The completion of the East Village Phase 2 beautification will help realize the Town’s vision of a dedicated pedestrian orientated destination in the heart of Town,” Bob Weir, town director of engineering said in a release.

Upgrades to the area include additional public spaces, reconfiguring the area to allow a better experience for pedestrians and new public lighting and seating areas.

Construction of phase 1 took place through 2021 and into 2022.

Some immediate benefits have been identified, including a new local brewery moving into the area.

As part of the project, Town Council have provided the green light to a development permit of a 72-unit apartment building with ground-level commercial offices.

Three of the rental units will be designated for affordable housing, while the remainder are set to be at market rent.

Work on the second phase of development in the area is expected to be done in 2023.
