Island highways expected to be busy throughout August long weekend

NANAIMO — A massive influx of visitors is expected to contribute to some slower-than-normal travel times along Island highways.

The B.C. Day long weekend is the busiest weekend of the summer season and one which stretches the limits of many highways and travel networks. Road limitations and ongoing construction work is expected to further complicate matters beginning Thursday, Aug. 3.

“Significant traffic congestion is expected along the corridor starting on Thursday evening, due to the long weekend, local events and a busy summer travel season,” the provincial transportation ministry warns.

Work along both Hwy. 1 at the Malahat and Hwy. 4 at Cameron Lake will be suspended, however both sites will still slow traffic down from normal levels.

No daytime closures are planned through the long weekend on Hwy. 4, where rock scaling work continues following a wildfire and subsequent rock slide in June.

Traffic will remain single-lane alternating however, with delays expected on both sides during peak travel times.

Travellers heading along Hwy. 1 to or from Victoria will also see some delays.

The Malahat Tunnel Hill project will suspend work beginning at 12 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 4 through to 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 8

“Although no traffic disruptions are planned at the Malahat Tunnel Hill project site during the long weekend, construction speed limits will remain in effect,” the province said.

Road closures, detours or details on other incidents are available through the Drive BC website.
