Nanaimo RCMP understanding more about Caravan’s movements prior to fatal Parkway crash

Jul 28, 2023 | 9:46 AM

NANAIMO — More is now known about how an ultimately fatal collision on the Nanaimo Parkway came to be.

Twenty-four-year-old Reid Davidson died of his injuries after being hit by a vehicle driving the wrong way on the Parkway at around 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday, July 19.

Police now know a green Dodge Caravan driven by a 59-year-old man was heading south on the Nanaimo Parkway at Superior Rd. at around 9:30 p.m. on the night of the crash.

Around 12 minutes later the same vehicle veered into the northbound lanes of the Parkway at Fifth St. intersection, continued south and ultimately collided with a Toyota Yaris driven by Davidson.

“We’re hoping this information, the public will see this, and realize maybe they were driving in that area and they simply haven’t checked their dash cam video or maybe that have eyewitness evidence that they haven’t shared with us,” Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien said.

O’Brien said there are several “gaps” in their knowledge of the Caravan’s whereabouts and what occurred in the 12 minutes between the Superior Rd. and Fifth St. sightings.

He added dash cam video is “perishable” and is urging anyone in the area around the times listed to check their footage before it’s overwritten.

The suspect driver was released from hospital days after the incident but is not in police custody.

An investigation into the crash is continuing, including officers waiting for toxicology reports to determine what role, if any, driver impairment played in the crash.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250 754 2345.
