LADYSMITH — RCMP officers have quickly tracked down the man they believe responsible for a serious stabbing.

A security guard was checking on reports of an open fire on private forestry lands near Nanaimo Airport, in the Cameron Rd. and Timberland Rd. area around noon on Wednesday, March 15.

Police say a fight between the guard and the suspect broke out.

“Following the check, there was an altercation occurred between the suspect and the security guard, which resulted in the security guard being assaulted and stabbed,” Cpl. Alex Bérubé said.

He suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital in Nanaimo for treatment but has since been released.

A 66-year-old Nanaimo man was identified and arrested Thursday. He was processed and released on a promise to appear in court in Duncan.

Berube told NanaimoNewsNOW the man hasn’t been formally charged and cannot be named.

“He was arrested for assault with a weapon and he will be set to answer to this charge on May 16.”

Anyone with information on the incident, who hasn’t already spoken to officers, is asked to contact Ladysmith RCMP at 250-245-2215, quoting file number 2023-800.
