‘So positive, so encouraging:’ fundraiser launched for creation of ‘Flying’ Phil statue

PARKSVILLE — For years, Phil St. Luke was a constant presence in the Oceanside community, now there’s a push to immortalize him forever.

With support on the overarching idea from Council, a community-driven fundraiser has launched to collect at least $80,000 to design, create and mount a statue for the late St. Luke to honour his contributions to the region.

Adam Fras, Parksville city councillor, said the statue idea first came up many years ago while “Flying Phil” was alive, but didn’t receive the support needed from Council. Now, it’s a fitting tribute following Phil’s passing in January.

“Having his presence around, he was always so supportive, so positive, so encouraging and he immediately lifts everyone’s spirits around him. I can’t recall a time where Phil’s been in a room and it didn’t make that room better.”

The fundraiser launched Tuesday, March 7 and will look to cover all the costs associated with the artwork. Exact designs, materials and placement are still to be determined.

Fras said figuring out where best to place a statue is tricky.

“Think about how many honks Phil got while he was walking along the street, well if you put a statue in a part of town it’s probably going to start getting a lot of honks and you don’t want it to be a nuisance for anybody.”

Artists are cueing to work on the design, according to Fras, while a foundry has agreed to cast, deliver and mount the piece.

In addition to collecting donations online, money can also be deposited into an account set up at the Coastal Community Credit Union downtown.

Any excess money collected will be donated to charities Phil supported, including Society of Organized Services, Special Olympics, BC SPCA and the Parksville Fire Department’s Food and Toy Drive.

Phil passed away on Jan. 13 prompting an outpouring of support for the long time community advocate and supporter.

Hundreds of people shared stories of Phil’s kindness, energy and passion which involved countless walks around the community, visits to businesses and his trademark of knowing everyone in town by name.

The City will host a public celebration of life for Phil on June 9 at Parksville Community Park.
