Chimney issues likely culprit in minor Friday morning house fire in Nanaimo

NANAIMO — Nobody was injured after a chimney-related house fire Friday morning.

Fire crews were called to the Goldfinch Cres. in the Diver Lake area just before 7:30 on Friday, Jan. 20, with smoke and sparks seen coming from the roof and side of a home.

Capt. Earle Ten Have said they’re not sure yet exactly what caused the fire, but believe it was related to the chimney.

“It was just an inside, normal wood stove running that something got too hot and it got into the siding, so we had to come and tear apart a little bit of the siding and put it out.”

Ten Have said while they don’t know exactly what fuel was being used in the stove, he doesn’t think the material being burned was the issue.

“Somehow the heat just transferred through the brick, into the wood, which caught the wood on fire. Why the brick got so hot, I don’t know…but anyway it was too hot against the wood.”

He reminded people who use wood-burning stoves to ensure they are properly inspected at least once a year, depending on how often it’s being used.

“Depends on how much you burn. Yearly for sure, if you use it. If you use wet wood it should be done more often than that.”

At least two people and a dog were home at the time, and all managed to get out safely.

Fire crews were on scene for about an hour.
