Nanaimo Sport Achievement Awards put out call for nominations

Dec 24, 2022 | 7:20 AM

NANAIMO — Nominations are now underway for the 18th Nanaimo Sport Achievement Awards.

Organizers are looking for submissions to spotlight success in sport in the 2022 calendar year.

There are a wide range of categories for athletes, teams, coaches, officials or sport administrators.

This includes junior athletes and masters in the Nanaimo area from Ladysmith to Nanoose Bay.

Spokesperson Marilyn Sullivan said the Sport Achievement Awards play an important role in the community.

“There is no other celebration in sport like this event. We are able to celebrate all sport and anything to do with sport.”

Of the 17 main awards, most focus on athletes and teams.

Two special awards are named after local sports heroes in Nanaimo.

The Michael Rhode Memorial Award is presented to an athlete, coach, volunteer or advocate who gives time, energy and commitment to sports and the community while the Steve Smith Memorial Award is for outstanding achievement and dedication to extreme sports.

The nomination deadline is Dec. 31 with the process able to be done online at www.nanaimosportachievementawards.com.

“It is very important to have a contact for not only the person nominated but also the person that did the nominating,” Sullivan said. “Please remember that for sport it will be for the year 2022. For some of the other categories it is for accomplishments during the person’s overall involvement.”

Sullivan noted the success of athletes in Nanaimo is supported by many others who put in countless hours.

“Sports wouldn’t happen without a person who volunteers to coach, administrators that help keep the team functioning, officials that play a big part in keeping the game honest no matter what that sport. Over the years the volunteer categories have highlighted many people we don’t even hear about who have given their time and expertise for years.”

A panel of judges will choose the finalists and winners in each category.

The 2023 Sport Achievement Awards ceremony will take place on Feb. 24 at the Coast Bastion Hotel.
