Police say no risk to public after Harewood stabbing

NANAIMO — A man was stabbed multiple times during a confrontation on Fifth St. near Bruce Ave. early Thursday morning.

Nanaimo RCMP Res. Cst. Gary O’Brien said a man was taken from the scene and transported to Victoria Regional General Hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries following the incident at about 4:15 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 24.

No arrests have been made as of Thursday afternoon with investigators still working to determine exactly who was involved.

“We’re having a hard time nailing that down,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW. “We believe there were multiple people involved in the confrontation, maybe upwards of two or three but we haven’t been definitive in saying how many there were.

It is believed to be an isolated incident, and police don’t believe the public is at risk.

In the immediate aftermath of the stabbing, police say the man staggered into 7-Eleven across the intersection and received emergency First Aid from staff inside.

O’Brien said it would be “speculation at this point” to comment on a potential motive or cause for the incident.

Investigators spent several hours on scene Thursday gathering evidence.

“The scene has been released, we were examining it for blood stains and taking pictures,” O’Brien said. “We’re currently looking at CCTV cameras, identifying witnesses and asking for any dash cam video of the incident.”

The stabbing happened on the sidewalk outside the second phase of the new University Village shopping centre.

A long section of police crime tape closed the sidewalk on the Bruce Ave. side of the shopping complex as officers preserved the scene and investigated.

A small section crime scene tape was also in place covering a portion of the public square at Fifth St. and Bruce Ave. in front of Big Wheel Burger.

Businesses opened as usual Thursday morning, despite the heavy police presence.
