NANAIMO — An early clash of the titans in the BCHL’s Coastal Division saw the Clippers take a 5-2 win over the Eagles.

The Clippers never trailed after getting an opening goal from Nick Sajevic late in the first period.

Tate Taylor scored a short time later to send the game to the intermission at 1-1.

Jake Hewitt and Mike Murtagh staked Nanaimo to a 3-1 lead with markers in the first half of the second frame.

Late in the second Surrey pulled within one on a quick shot by defenceman Ty Brassington.

The Clippers Aidan Campbell and Surrey’s Eli Pulver slammed the door in the final period but Nanaimo added empy net goals by Willyam Gendron and Charles Tardif.

Hewitt led the attack with a goal and three assists and was named the game’s first star.

His line mates Tardif and Murtagh rounded out the three stars.

The final shots were 34-26 in favour of the Eagles while Nanaimo went 0/1 on the power play and 4/4 killing penalties.

The Clippers have a record of 10-2 taking sole possession of first place in the Coastal Division.
