Waters hat trick lifts Clippers to 7-4 win over Cowichan Valley

NANAIMO — After a quite first period the Clippers offense came alive in a 7-4 victory over Cowichan.

The Capitals had the only goal of the first period on a quick shot from in close by Massimo Lombardi.

Shane Shelest was sharp in goal for Nanaimo making 16 saves.

At the other end McCoy Bidewell stopped all ten Clipper shots he faced.

Nanaimo came out on fire in the second period with a shorthanded goal in the first minute by Jake Hewitt.

Brody Waters added another shorthanded tally at the six minute mark.

Then it was the Capitals turn to score a pair of goals by Lombardi and a then power play marker from Owen Goodbrand.

The Clippers flipped the script again with Waters notching a goal on the man advantage and Mike Murtagh vaulting Nanaimo back in front.

Luke Strickland knotted the game again with less than one second remaining in the middle period.

Jake Hewitt scored again in the first minute of the third and from there Nanaimo never looked back.

Brody Waters finished off his hat trick and Willyam Gendron capped off the scoring to give the Clippers their ninth win of the season.

Nanaimo outshot Cowichan 43-32 with both teams going 1/3 on the man advantage.

Waters, Hewitt and Kai Daniells each had three points in the win and Shane Shelest improved his personal record to 4-0.

The Clippers are set for a first place showdown against the Surrey Eagles on Oct. 28 at Frank Crane Arena.

They’ll host Coquitlam on Oct. 29.
