NANAIMO — Emergency preparedness will be front and centre today at work places, schools, homes around the province.

The Great British Columbia ShakeOut, hosted by the BC Earthquake Alliance takes place on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 10:20 a.m.

The largest earthquake drill in the province saw 700,000 people participate, who for people in indoor environments dropped to the ground, took cover and held on to something sturdy for one minute.

“It is extremely important for a person to move as little as possible to reach the place of safety they have identified because most injuries occur when people try to move more than a short distance during the shaking,” stated the Alliance on on its website Shakeoutbc.ca.

Pattison Media’s mid Island radio stations are all participating in the drill: 102.3 FM The Wave and 106.9 FM The Wolf, 88.5 FM The Beach and 99.9 FM The Lounge.

The BC Earthquake Alliance outlines how to participate in its emergency drill and offers precautions to be best prepared in case an earthquake strikes on its website.

The Regional District of Nanaimo is taking part in the exercise, which will see its bus driver pull over to participate.

October is Emergency Preparedness Month in the City of Nanaimo.
