Local SPCA branches slash adoption fees in half

NANAIMO — If you ever thought about adopting a furry friend, now is your chance to do it for half the price.

From Oct.15 to 29, standard adoption fees at all BC SPCA locations are being cut in half.

Animal care supervisor at the Nanaimo SPCA Katie Heagle said all applications will still go through the same vetting process.

“They have to apply online or they can come into the facility and meet the animals. We’ll do a meet and greet, and get to know the potential adopters. Same process as always.”

Adoption fees for dogs range from $183 for seniors to $579 for puppies, while cats are between $98 and $244. Fees for smaller animals including rabbits and guinea pigs are less.

The cost include micro-chipping and lifetime registration with the BC Pet Registry.

While they currently don’t have any farm animals at the Nanaimo branch, Heagle said this 50 per cent off adoption fee also applies.

“Horses, goats, sometimes if we have chickens, pigs. We do not have any in this facility, but we do have some over in our Surrey barn and other places in B.C.”

Heagle said when it comes to larger animals like goats or horses, SPCAs might ask for a picture of their home setup of potential adoptees or do a home visit to ensure they have the capacity to care for larger animals.

It’s not the first time BC SPCA branches have slashed rates in a bid to drive adoptions.

Since opening their doors back up to the public following two years of being closed due to the pandemic, Heagle said they’re seeing their adoptable animals get into permanent homes a lot quicker.

“We’re still going through the same matching process, so they might end up hanging out in the shelter a little bit longer while we have the conversation and get them set up in the computer, but we are definitely seeing an increase in adoptions and going into homes faster.”
