NANAIMO — Construction appears to be a forgone conclusion for a nearly 170 unit strata townhouse development not far from Nanaimo’s VIU campus.

Proponents of a development on Fourth St. between Hillcrest Ave. and Howard Ave presented their plan to the City of Nanaimo’s Design Advisory Panel during a Thursday, Oct 13 meeting.

A development permit application calls for 168 strata units in 22 three-storey buildings on about seven acres of undeveloped land at 560 Fourth St. and 361 Howard Ave.

A City staff report notes the project proposes most of the units on the west side of the site to be divided by Watfield Ave, which will be extended to connect Third and Fourth streets.

The development will cater to larger households with most of the units comprising of three bedrooms and the remaining 21 units to be four bedroom homes.

On-site garages, visitor parking, an amenity building and park dedication are included in the proposed development.

A series of public multi-use trials are envisioned through the site.

Design Advisory Panel members were complimentary of the project and endorsed it. They recommended minor changes, including a bolstered tree canopy.

City councillors unanimously endorsed the project following a recent public hearing.

A final Council vote in favour is required to advance the project to the building permit stage.

Several hundred units of multi-family housing in the Third St./Howard Ave. area have been built in recent years, or are under construction.
