NANAIMO — Fewer voters across the region took advantage of advance voting opportunities ahead of Saturday’s municipal election.

Data from the City of Nanaimo showed approximately 4,430 votes were cast during two advance voting opportunities on Oct. 5 and 12.

The tally is a drop from the nearly 5,000 votes submitted ahead of the 2018 election which saw a near-wholesale change of Council including a new Mayor and just two incumbent Councillors retaining their positions.

Eight of the nine members of City Council for the last four years are seeking re-election this year.

If you are unsure who to vote for, or which candidates match your views and ambitions for the City of Nanaimo, see the results from our NanaimoVotes survey where we asked all 33 candidates questions on topics ranging from housing to homelessness, transportation to economic development.

Complete survey results are available here.

The City of Parksville voters cast 1,626 ballots over the two-day period, on par with the 1,635 advance ballots cast for the 2018 election.

Reports from the Town of Qualicum Beach showed 2,277 ballots were cast in the municipality, split roughly evenly between the two days. The number is marginally up on the 2,128 ballots cast in advance of the 2018 election.

According to CivicInfo BC, 8,398 people are eligible to vote in the election, while the Town reports around 350 mail-in ballot requests were processed.

The Regional District of Nanaimo reported 1,012 advance votes.

In the District of Lantzville 716 people voted early this year, far surpassing the 389 early bird voters in Lantzville in 2018.

The Town of Ladysmith reported 435 people took advantage of advance voting this year.
