‘It’s amazing:’ back-to-school donations piling high for Nanaimo’s Fresh Start
NANAIMO — With Saturday being the big day, a local barber thinks this year’s Fresh Start will be his best year ever.
Back for its 12th year, Fresh Start offers free back-to-school haircuts and a collection of classroom must-haves, with the latest iteration of the event happening Saturday, Sept. 5, at Diana Krall Plaza.
Organizer and owner of That 50’s Barbershop Dave Lawrence, told NanaimoNewsNOW he feels it might be a record-setting year in terms of the amount of donations he’s received, both financially and in items dropped off at his shop on Victoria Cres.
“The barbershop is empty now, but it has been completely filled. Our storage unit, I was there last night, literally had a hard time pulling the door shut because there’s so much stuff. We bought thousands of dollars worth of new winter coats and clothes for kids. We’re partnering up with bigger organizations that are helping us out too.”
