Clippers come from behind to beat Kings 5-4 in OT

NANAIMO — The Clippers didn’t hold a lead but persevered to earn a 5-4 victory in Powell River.

Kai Daniells was the key figure with two goals and an assist including the winner 54 seconds into overtime.

The Kings led 1-0 after the first period and 2-0 early in the second before goals less than a minute apart from Rylan Yates and Brody Waters knotted the contest.

Nic Porchetta gave Powell River a 3-2 advantage midway through the second frame that would carry over into the third.

Jeremie Payant tied the game again two minutes in but a wicked shot by Anthony Yu once again gave the home team a lead at 4-3.

That set the stage for Daniells to even it up with four minutes to play and win the game on a dominating shift in overtime.

The entire first shift of the extra session was spent in the Powell River zone with Daniells, Waters and Michael Craig dominating possession.

The final shots finished 42-38 for the Clippers and Nanaimo had the game’s only two power plays.

The Sept. 24 three stars were:

1) Kai Daniells 2) Marcus Dashevsky 3) Sam Schoenfield

Nanaimo swept their weekend series with the Kings and have now won 13 straight head to head meetings dating back to January of 2020.

The same two teams will battle again in the Clippers home opener Sept. 30 at Frank Crane Arena.
