NANAIMO β€” The resident of a Diver Lake area home died after being unable to escape a fire.

Emergency services including Nanaimo Fire Rescue, BC Emergency Health Services and Nanaimo RCMP attended to the 2500 block of Quill Dr. on Thursday, June 9 just after 8:30 a.m. after calls to 911 reported a house on fire.

Nanaimo Fire Rescue assistant chief Stu Kenning said crews arrived to find light smoke coming out of the home.

β€œThe fire crews quickly knocked a door open, knocked down the fire. Unfortunately they found an elderly male inside who had succumbed to the smoke and fire. He was in a hospital bed.”

Kenning confirmed the man was found inside the living room portion of the home and was alone at the time. He was unable to say whether there were oxygen tanks or other potential flammables near the fire.

Neighbours initially heard a smoke detector going off and came outside to investigate before calling 911.

One neighbour told NanaimoNewsNOW they evacuated their house as a precaution, concerned about a possible explosion.

Nanaimo RCMP remained on scene to conduct an investigation, including into the cause of the fire, with other agencies en route.
