New 88-unit apartment complex approved for Nanaimo’s Dover neighbourhood

NANAIMO — More residential units are on track for Nanaimo’s north end.

A development permit for a six-storey building with 88 residential units at 6330 McRobb Ave., near Costco, was approved at May 16 council meeting.

The building would contain studio apartments, along with a number of one, two, and three-bedroom units and comes with height variance from 14 metres to 19.6 metres to accommodate an additional floor.

“It’s one of the reasons why some companies are having difficulty finding employees because they come here, get the job and then go look for a place to live and they can’t find it,’ coun. Jim Turley said when discussing an endless need for housing in Nanaimo.

Turley added there is continued concern about the lack of affordable housing in the city.

“That’s the challenge that Nanaimo is going to be facing, it casts a shadow on our ability as a city to provide enough housing for people who want to come here.”

Projected rent or purchase prices of the McRobb units were not disclosed.

The building is also eyed as a transitional property for an adjacent lot to the south which is zoned for a high-density residential building up to 20 storeys tall.

Construction of the new six-storey building will complete the Dover Ridge Apartment complex fronting McRobb Ave. and Sentinel Dr.

Council approved the build of a six-storey, 66-unit condo building in May 2020, also on McRobb Ave.

The motion was approved unanimously and will require a building permit in order to move forward.

North Nanaimo has seen a notable increase over the last several years in multi-family residential units, particularly within walking distance of Woodgrove Centre.
