NANAIMO — Two boys were apprehended by passing drivers, then arrested by police after allegedly throwing rocks onto cars driving at high speeds.

Several northbound vehicles were hit by rocks allegedly thrown by two boys, aged 12 and 13, from a bluff along the Nanaimo Pkwy. around 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 8.

“A number of cars were struck, several stopped,” Reserve Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW. “We responded just after another motorist had actually stopped the two boys and made a citizens arrest before they got on their bikes and took off.”

The pair were arrested for mischief and taken back to the detachment before being returned to their parents.

O’Brien said both boys were apologetic.

Police will address the situation with the boys’ parents, with at least one set to appear before the courts due to a past history with police, according to O’Brien.

The other could see his punishment take the form of restorative justice.

“This is a classic example of young teenagers not using any common sense whatsoever and not recognizing the impact of their actions,” O’Brien said. “They have to be held accountable.”

Police estimate damage to vehicles will be in the thousands of dollars, however final totals won’t be known as vehicles hit were from the north Island, Victoria as well as Nanaimo.

O’Brien said he spoke with an owner of one of the vehicles hit.

“They actually thought their vehicle had been struck by a bullet, the noise was so powerful. A rock skimmed across their front windshield and took two cracks out of it, needless to say it will need replacement.”

The offenders cannot be named due to being under the age of 18.
