Early morning suspicious car fire in Lantzville under investigation by RCMP

LANTZVILLE — Investigators are working to determine how and why a vehicle was apparently set alight in an early morning fire.

One engine and one water tender from Lantzville Fire Rescue attended the scene just before 5 a.m. on Thursday, April 28 at the south end of Harwood Dr., finding a fully involved car parked off to the side of the road.

Lantzville fire chief Neil Rukus told NanaimoNewsNOW his members made quick work of the fire and it extinguished quickly.

“The car was on the side of the road of an access road that goes down to the power lines. We would consider it a suspicious fire as there was nobody around the vehicle when crews arrived on scene.”

No injuries were reported from the incident.

The file has been turned over to Nanaimo RCMP for an investigation.

Rukus was unsure whether police were able to find a VIN, or vehicle identification number, from the charred wreckage, but did say no license plates were recovered from the car.

Crews were alerted quickly to the situation by calls from nearby residents.

“We’re actually quite lucky the amount of people that called in being the time of the morning that so many people heard and saw the fire occur and were able to call and have us attend quite quickly,” Rukus added.

He also encouraged residents to keep an active eye out for these sorts of situations, as warmer weather comes and the risk of fires spreading into nearby trees and brush increases.
