Windy weather & Easter travellers hamper Nanaimo-Lower Mainland crossings

Apr 18, 2022 | 10:15 AM

NANAIMO — A pair of cancelled sailings due to weather has added to an already hectic travel day on the Salish Sea.

BC Ferries cancelled the first two round trips between Nanaimo’s Departure Bay and Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver due to strong winds.

The cancellations further backed up traffic already at high levels due to the Easter long weekend.

As a result, the first four sailings from Nanaimo to Vancouver are full, with 5:55 p.m. the first available space as of Monday morning.

Four sailings between 10:15 a.m. and 5:45 p.m. are also full between Duke Point and Tsawwassen with the first available spaces available on the 8:15 p.m. departure.

It’s also possible the weather could further complicate travel with a gale warning in effect for the Straight of Georgia both north and south of Nanaimo.

Environment Canada is warning of winds up to 35 knots, diminishing through the day. It’s paired with a wind warning for Nanoose Bay and parts north on eastern Vancouver Island.

Current conditions, including sailing waits for the Departure Bay to Horseshoe Bay and Duke Point to Tsawwassen routes are available on the BC Ferries website.
