SOUTH SURREY — Affiliate goaltender Merik Erickson made 33 saves to guide the Clippers to a 5-2 win over the Surrey Eagles.

Despite being outshot 35-24 Erickson earned the victory and first star honours.

The callup from Delta of the PIJHL stopped nine of ten shots in the first period, all 16 that came his way in the second and another eight of nine in the third.

Surrey led 1-0 after the first but Nanaimo’s offense came alive in the second period with goals by Brody Waters, Tristan Fraser on the man advantage and Luca Grabas.

Waters was also stopped on a penalty shot by Eagles netminder Eli Pulver.

Self’s second of the night tightened up the game in the third period but Keighan Gerrie responded 34 seconds later before a clinching empty netter by Jeremie Payant.

Payant led the offence with a goal and two assists and Gerrie had one goal and one assist in the victory.

The Clippers went 1/6 on the power play and 2/3 on the penalty kill.

Surrey and Nanaimo have both won a pair of road games in the season series so far with a return engagement at the South Surrey Arena Feb. 6 at 4 p.m.

The Clippers 23-13-1 record leaves the team in third place in the Coastal Division.
