Nanaimo SPCA sees over $10,000 in donations after Betty White’s passing

NANAIMO — The death of a Hollywood icon, well known for her love of animals, has triggered a flood of donations.

In the wake of Betty White’s passing on Dec. 31, 2021 at the age of 99, an online campaign saw well over $400,000 donated in White’s memory to the BC SPCA.

Eileen Drever with the BC SPCA told NanaimoNewsNOW, $10,000 was specifically directed by donors to the Nanaimo and District branch.

“We’re overwhelmed and clearly Betty White was well loved, she was an animal advocate, an animal lover.. She had such a huge fan base, clearly, because people donated…in Betty’s name.”

The collection of in excess of $400,000 is the BC SPCA’s single largest fundraising day in their history.

Drever said the money collected by the provincial office through their website will be funnelled “to whatever the greatest need is.”

“We have many services within the organization, cruelty investigations, emergency medical fund, we also shelter animals, rehabilitate animals as well as outreach and education programs.”

The #BettyWhiteChallenge was started on social media shortly after the icon’s death and encouraged donations of $5 or more to local animal rescue organizations.
