NANAIMO — Site preparation work has begun in anticipation of a four storey affordable housing complex in north Nanaimo.

The 53-unit independent living facility, to be owned and operated by the Nanaimo Affordable Housing Society, was recently granted a building permit to construct the facility at 6010 Hammond Bay Rd.

The building’s target residents include low and moderate income individuals, small families and people living with disabilities, according to a statement from BC Housing.

Residents of the development will be of varying ages and income levels occupying 38 two bedroom units and 15 one bedroom apartments.

“Some of the units will be rent-geared-to-income, meaning that the tenant pays 30 per cent of their gross annual income, divided by 12, on monthly rent. Some units will be rented at deep subsidy (shelter rates, meaning they are affordable to someone on disability or social assistance).” BC Housing stated.

BC Housing expects construction of the facility near Brickyard Rd. will be complete in the middle of 2023.

The Hammond Bay Rd. project was first announced in Dec. 2020 through the Building BC: Community Housing Fund.
