NANAIMO — A significant dent in the city’s seniors’ affordable housing crisis is about to take shape following the recent completion of a 159 unit facility.

Funded in partnership with BC Housing, the Nanaimo Affordable Housing Society hopes their six storey building at 10 Buttertubs Dr. will receive an occupancy permit from the City within a few weeks.

Buttertubs Place includes units as small as studio to as large as two bedroom, some overseeing Buttertubs Marsh and Mount Benson. Two elevators, four accessible units and walk-in showers for all units are some of the other features suited for their residents.

BC Housing stated rents vary between $500 monhly for a fully wheelchair accessible studio to $1,665 for a two-bedroom unit. Most of the units are one-bedroom renting for $940.

An optional amenity package is either $647 or $747, featuring three meals a day Monday to Friday served in a communal hall prepared by chefs in an on-site commercial kitchen. A cable, internet, phone package is included in the amenities package, while all units have full kitchens.

“While there are four units that are currently set up to be fully wheelchair accessible, all of the other units are considered to be ‘adaptable’ meaning they can be easily and inexpensively modified to meet residents’ changing requirements over time,” BC Housing stated, noting Buttertubs Place was constructed for residents to be able to age-in-place.

Other features of Buttertubs Place includes on-site social programs and a secured parking garage.

Applications to live in the facility along with more information on the project are available here at the Nanaimo Affordable Housing Society (NAHS) website.

All NAHS seniors’ housing facilities are open to singles and couples 65-years-old and up.

NAHS stated it is in the visionary stage of upgrading its vast collection of aging patio homes across the street.

“Once 10 Buttertubs Pl. is at full occupancy, NAHS will begin to formulate a plan to revitalize the property and ensure its longevity as safe and quiet housing for our community,” a NAHS statement read.
