Ferry services delayed or cancelled due to incoming weather

NANAIMO — BC Ferries is reporting a number of changes for ferry service in anticipation of high winds.

The company has cancelled the 8:15 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. sailings on Friday, Dec. 10 between Duke Point and Tsawwassen.

BC Ferries are also modifying the final trip of the night between Departure Bay to Horseshoe Bay with regularly scheduled 10:10 p.m. departure from Vancouver pushed back to 10:50 p.m.

“Not only is it the wind speed, but it’s also the direction of the wind, the sea state and the wave height… we certainly don’t take the decision lightly because we know people have places to go, but it’s all in the interest of safety,” Deborah Marshall, BC Ferries spokesperson, said.

Marshall added the sailings delay between Nanaimo and West Vancouver is due to the Queen of Surrey’s role in connecting Vancouver to the Sunshine Coast.

“We are cancelling what we call the “L” run on that route [Friday], so we’ll keep the Langdale ship dedicated to Langdale. I would suggest anybody travelling to Langdale do consult our website.”

BC Ferries said more changes to the afternoon schedule could be coming, depending on how the wind affects the region.

The changes are due to expected high winds and rain coming to the area, with Environment Canada expected it to affect much of the south and east part of the island, from Campbell River south to Duncan.

Winds are expected to gust up to 80 kilometres per hour with between 20 and 40 millimetres of rain. The storm system is expected to move out of the area by Saturday evening.
