NANAIMO — Follow up rounds of testing have confirmed two additional cases linked to a COVID-19 outbreak at NRGH.

One patient and one staff member recently tested positive, bringing the total number of people affected by the outbreak to 17, including 14 patients and three staff.

All are at the hospital’s Transitional Care Unit. Other areas of the hospital, including the emergency room, remain fully operational and safe for use and visitation.

Island Health said in a release all other test results conducted in the unit were negative and no further results are outstanding at this time.

The outbreak was confirmed Monday, Nov. 1 and announced publicly a day later.

It’s the second outbreak in the unit during the pandemic and the fourth overall at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

It’s also the largest by a considerable margin in terms of number of people affected.

A second outbreak in Nanaimo, at Chartwell Malaspina long term care home remains stable with five people affected, including three residents and two staff.

Those cases are isolated to the Hummingbird Unit of the facility with no spread to other areas.
