NANAIMO — Island Health is flattening its COVID-19 curve, just at a higher-than-desired level.

A total of 225 new cases were confirmed over the weekend, an average of 75 for each of the three reporting periods. It’s in line with average daily increases over the last month.

The central and south Island split a bulk of the additions, with 90 new on the central Island and 115 to the south since Friday. The north Island added 20 new cases.

Active cases for Island Health rose 61, now sitting at 597. Central Vancouver Island has 240 active cases, a rise of 26 from Friday.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of daily COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

The BC Centre for Disease Control reports 37 people are admitted to hospital for COVID-19 on Vancouver Island, including 25 in intensive care.

Public health and the province confirmed another 1,986 cases over the three days across B.C.

Fraser Health accounted for most of the new cases, 782, followed by the Interior and Northern Health authorities.

Active cases dropped to 5,986 including 326 people hospitalized with 142 in intensive care.

Ten additional deaths linked to the pandemic were also reported, however none were in Island Health.
