NANAIMO — A local man was hospitalized after a group of teenagers reportedly assaulted him en masse.

Police were called to 560 of Fourth St. around 7 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 27 and found the 39-year-old man with cuts and bruises including his left eye being swollen shut. While in hospital he was also treated for concussion.

Cst. Gary O’Brien said in a release the man was walking from the Harewood 7-Eleven when he saw the six teenagers.

“He went down for a slurpee, he first saw the kids and they were attracting a lot of attention to themselves, they were very loud and joking,” O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW. “He walked by them, no words were exchanged and the next thing you know he was punched in the back of the head.”

O’Brien added the man believes he lost consciousness for a short while after being kicked and punched repeatedly on the ground.

The group then ran down Fourth St., towards Wakesiah Ave.

The man said only two of the teens were involved in the beating, with the others watching on.

He was able to provide a partial description to police of a 16 or 17-year-old child with short, curly hair, dark skin and wearing a black t-shirt and shorts.

The second child was also 16 or 17 with long blonde hair, dark skin and was wearing a grey shirt.

Police are seeking any additional information on this incident and are encouraging people to call the RCMP’s non-emergency line at 250 754 2345, quoting file number 2021-36463.
