Central Island sees large drop in active COVID-19 cases

NANAIMO — Island Health has recorded yet another drop in active COVID-19 cases.

Active infections in the health authority dropped another 18 to 540, after a nearly 20 per cent decreased over the weekend.

The largest drop in active cases came from the central Island with 181 cases, down from 203. The north saw a smaller drop, however the southern Vancouver Island region saw an increase, up 10 to 319.

Of the 43 new cases added for Island Health on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 65 per cent were in the south.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the province, based on the timing of daily COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports local verified data from Island Health.

According to the BC CDC, 32 patients are currently in Island hospitals for COVID-19 including 16 in critical care.

Provincially, 525 new cases were added with active cases decreasing to 5,282.

A total of 332 people are in B.C. hospitals with just under half admitted to critical care wards.

The majority of recent hospitalizations, 79 per cent from Sept. 13-19, continue to be among unvaccinated people.

Earlier on Tuesday, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry encouraged unsure new and expectant mothers to get vaccinated against COVID-19, citing several studies which show the safety and efficacy of the shot.
