Active cases in Island Health near unchanged as B.C. sees curve flattening

NANAIMO — A minimal change in active cases for Island Health.

A further 62 cases were confirmed by Island Health on Wednesday, Sept. 8, including 30 in the central Island. Six were based in the north of the health authority while the remaining 26 were south of the Malahat.

Active cases increased by just one, to 385, with the central Island area accounting for 163.

According to the BC CDC, 18 people are hospitalized as a result of COVID-19 symptoms including 12 requiring critical care.

Provincially, 814 new cases were announced by the province.

It is one of the higher daily increases in recent weeks, however the rolling seven day average has begun to flatten and turn down through late August and early September.

The average peaked at 713 cases per day to start September, but was at 670 as of Sept. 7.

A total of 5,550 active cases remain including 261 people in hospital with 129 of those patients receiving critical care. No fatalities linked to the pandemic were reported Wednesday.

The percentage of eligible people aged 12 and up who have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine continues to creep up, now at 85.8 per cent or 3.95 million people.

78.6 per cent (3.6 million) of eligible people have received their second dose.
