Canada Day events in Nanaimo

NANAIMO — Though Canada Day 2021 arrives at a time of continuing discussions and calls for celebrations to be cancelled, many events are running throughout the mid-island area.

Nanaimo:

Canada Day events with games, prizes and entertainment happen at Maffeo Sutton Park, Westwood Lake, Neck Point, Pipers Lagoon, Harewood Centennial Park and the Departure Bay beach.

Earlier, mayor Leonard Krog said the spaced out and limited Canada Day events in Nanaimo were due to COVID-19 and there was no consideration given to postponing the day in the wake of tragic discoveries involving the residential school system.

Nanoose Bay:

The Orange Day by the Bay event isn’t a traditional Canada Day event. Hosted by comedian Peter Hudson and co-organized by Tyler Bob of Snaw-Naw-As First Nation, it features the most live performances of any event on the day in the area. All donations from Orange Day in the Bay go to the Setut Group, which is a fledgling organization aimed at paying it forward.

No events are scheduled for Parksville or Qualicum Beach.
