New CAO hired for Regional District of Nanaimo

NANAIMO — The Regional District of Nanaimo board turned to its neighbour for its next chief administrative officer.

The board announced the hiring of Doug Holmes to lead the RDN after he served the same role with the Alberni Cloyoquot Regional District since 2017.

“The opportunity to contribute to the sustainability and public service in this region was very attractive,” Holmes told NanaimoNewsNOW.

Holmes is a longtime Nanaimo resident who was previously with the City of Nanaimo for seven years, including a tenure as assistant city manager.

He said relationship building will be a key early priority.

“Making sure that all of the partnerships are strong and making sure that the relationships among the staff in serving the board are as solid as possible, that’s my key focus area to start with.”

Holmes is a certified professional accountant previously who has served as the director of renewal and deputy CAO for the town of High River, Alberta and CAO of the Sunshine Coast Regional District.

He starts his new position with the RDN in August and will be on a salary of $250,000.

Holmes replaces Phyllis Carlyle, who informed the RDN board earlier this year she would not extend her five year contract signed in October, 2016.

The Regional District of Nanaimo includes three municipalities and seven rural areas encompassing about 160,000 people.
