NANAIMO — Both an RCMP officer and the driver of another car were taken to hospital after an evening crash.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said a Nanaimo RCMP cruiser was t-boned in the intersection of Third St. and Howard Ave. around just before 6 p.m. on Monday, May 10.

The police car was hit in the Third St. intersection by a white Toyota Camry sedan which did not stop when coming off of Howard Ave., as confirmed by dash cam footage from a car in the area.

Witnesses at the scene told NanaimoNewsNOW the police cruiser was driving quickly on Third St. without sirens on.

The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and was cooperative with police.

Drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the incident.

Both drivers were taken to hospital. O’Brien said the Nanaimo RCMP officer is recovering at home.

The crash caused a large response from emergency vehicles including around six RCMP cruisers along with Nanaimo Fire Rescue attending.

O’Brien said the officer involved in the crash called for immediate assistance after the crash given the impact and airbags being deployed, at which time officers in the area rushed to the scene.
