Clippers score first but fall 5-1 to Bulldogs

Apr 25, 2021 | 6:01 PM

PORT ALBERNI – The Clippers have yet to beat the Bulldogs in this Island Pod season after Alberni Valley won 5-1 on April 25.

Trevor LeDonne opened the scoring two minutes into the game and the Clippers were seven seconds away from taking a lead into the intermission.

A Josh Van Unen power play marker evened the score and then Alberni Valley took over in the second period by scoring on the powerplay, at even strength and shorthanded.

The Clippers thought they had scored when Jaeger Murdock put a puck behind Luke Pearson with about five minutes to go in the game but it was called off for being put in with a high stick.

A late goal by Alberni Valley was the only tally of the third period.

Stephen Castagna, Josh Van Unen and Emanuelson Charbonneau each earned three points for the Bulldogs in the victory.

In his second start in the BCHL Ethan Neitsch made 40 saves for the Clippers as Alberni outshot Nanaimo 45-36.

The Bulldogs also went 3/7 on the power play while the Clippers were 0/4 and surrendered a shorthanded goal.

Clippers head coach Darren Naylor was ejected from the game near the end of the first period leaving associate coach Colin Birkas to run the bench for the rest of the afternoon.

Nanaimo has two more head to head matchups in a row with Alberni Valley.

The same two teams will play April 28 and 30.

The Clippers also have a game versus the Grizzlies on May 1.
