NANAIMO — An outbreak at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital has expanded.

Island Health confirmed one additional case linked to the outbreak declared on Wednesday, April 14 in the hospital’s high intensity rehab unit.

The new case is in a patient in the unit and was identified through follow-up testing at the hospital.

It marks the fourth patient to test positive during the outbreak.

The rehab unit is locked down with no new admissions permitted, while staff working in the unit are not on shift in other areas of the hospital.

All other parts of the hospital, including the emergency room, remain fully operational.

It’s the third outbreak at NRGH following events in November and January where a total of eight people tested positive.

In both cases, the outbreak did not spread beyond the initial location it was detected in.

39 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in the health authority on Friday, with active cases in the central Island region dropping significantly.
