South and Central Vancouver Island split difference of new Island Health COVID cases

NANAIMO — The number of new COVID-19 cases in Island Health were split almost evenly between the southern and central regions.

South Vancouver Island on April 9 saw 25 new cases while central Vancouver Island saw 23. The remaining two were in north Vancouver Island, for a daily total of 50 new cases.

Central Vancouver Island led the region in COVID-19 infections for much of the pandemic but south Vancouver Island recently overtook it with the most active cases. Active cases are primarily found in the Greater Victoria area and the Greater Nanaimo area.

There are currently 508 active cases, a slight change from the day before.

Central Vancouver Island has 212 active while south Vancouver Island has 270.

Across the province, the 1,262 new cases announced is slightly down from the record-breaking high announced the day before, for the second worst day yet during the pandemic. .

There are currently 9,574 active cases with a further 15,673 people under public health monitoring.

The number of hospitalizations and people receiving intensive care remained steady at the highest levels seen throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. There’s 336 people in hospital, with 101 of those patients in the ICU.

Two new fatalities were recorded as B.C. nears 1,500 deaths due to COVID-19.

There are currently 105 active variant cases of the 4,111 found so far in B.C.

Over 1 million doses of vaccine have been provided in B.C. by Friday.
