Number of active COVID-19 cases in Arviat, Nunavut, grows by 10

ARVIAT, Nunavut — COVID-19 infections in Arviat grew by 10 overnight to bring the Nunavut community’s active case count to 14.

The community of about 2,800 has been under a strict lockdown since November with schools and non-essential businesses closed and travel restricted.

Arviat also declared a state of emergency on Feb. 24 and brought in a nightly curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Chief public health officer Dr. Michael Patterson is urging Arviat residents to follow public- health orders and to take isolation rules seriously.

The community’s member of the legislature has called on the Nunavut government to provide isolation spaces for infected Arviat residents who live in overcrowded housing.

Arviat is the only place in the territory with active COVID-19 cases, and has had higher numbers than anywhere else in Nunavut since the pandemic began — 325 of the 369 total.
