Additional COVID-19 exposure events at Nanaimo’s Rock City Elementary, Bayview Elementary

NANAIMO — Two elementary schools in Nanaimo have recorded additional COVID-19 cases in the last week.

School District 68 tweeted Wednesday night both Rock City Elementary and Bayview Elementary were subjected to more COVID-19 exposure events. Rock City suffered its additional exposure from Jan. 26 through 29th, including the previous exposure on Jan. 27 announced on Feb. 1.

Bayview Elementary suffered potential exposures on Jan. 25, from the 27 to 29 and Feb. 1, including the previous exposure date.

Bayview’s first exposure was announced on Jan. 31, along with an exposure at Snuneymuxw First Nation’s Qwum Qwum Stuwixwulh.

John Barsby Secondary school followed suit on Feb. 2, making it the first Nanaimo school to be listed on Island Health’s school exposure page twice during the pandemic.

All exposure dates were in the last week of January.

Island Health has completed contact tracing and those who had a risky exposure with the individual either already have or will be notified shortly.

This is the latest spread of COVID-19 through the Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District after numerous exposure events throughout November.

Cases were largely linked to out-of-school activities, with little evidence of transmission in school.

The province is due to make an announcement on Thursday, Feb. 4 on “enhanced health and safety guidelines for K-12 students and staff.”

The announcement is expected to come with more funding to support schools through the pandemic.
