NANAIMO —Two local schools have reported COVID-19 exposures.

School District 68 reported late Sunday night a potential exposure events on Jan. 27 and 29 at Bayview Elementary School in south Nanaimo.

Snuneymuxw First Nation also confirmed a single event at Qwum Qwum Stuwixwulh on Jan. 28.

Tweets from SD68 and Snuneymuxw First Nation noted contact tracing is underway by Island Health and those who had a potential exposure with the individual will be notified.

“We identify and notify close contacts who may be at an increased risk, and advise them to self-isolate and monitor for symptoms for 14 days,” Island Health notes on its website.

Qwum Qwum Stuwixwulh will be closed Monday Feb. 1 and Tuesday Feb. 2 for cleaning out of ‘an abundance of caution’ according to SFN.

Snuneymuxw First Nation dealt with a cluster of cases in December and January, with doses of the Moderna vaccine fast-tracked to curb spread.

Nanaimo-Ladysmith Public Schools had a series of exposure events since a return to class in September.

Several elementary schools including Randerson Ridge, Forest Park and Frank J. Ney have recorded exposures.

Dover Bay, Wellington, John Barsby, Nanaimo District and Ladysmith Secondary Schools also had confirmed cases in late 2020.

Few exposures in the district have extended past the initial confirmed cases and almost all were linked to external activities and not transmission in school.
