NANAIMO — Island Health has once again avoided recording new fatalities in the ongoing battle against COVID-19.

A joint statement from provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and health minister Adrian Dix on Tuesday, Jan. 19 confirmed Island Health was the only B.C. health authority to not suffer a loss of life due to COVID-19 since Monday.

A total of 12 people were confirmed to have passed away combined in every other health authority.

Two people had passed away within Island Health during the weekend reporting period, for a total of 17 since the pandemic began nearly one year ago.

Island Health reported 30 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday with now 187 active cases out of 1,306 detected throughout the pandemic.

Just over 71 per cent of all active cases in the health authority are within the central Vancouver Island area including communities like Nanaimo and Parksville.

There is a data discrepancy between Island Health and the BC CDC, based on the timing of COVID-19 results. NanaimoNewsNOW reports the Island Health confirmed data.

Throughout the province, 465 cases were added to B.C.’s total.

There are currently 4,331 active COVID-19 cases across all of B.C., with another 6,864 people under active health monitoring. The number of active cases rose just five from Monday’s report.

The number of people in hospital reached its lowest point since Dec. 3, with 329 people in hospital in B.C., with 70 receiving intensive care.
