LONGUEUIL, Que. — Police say a man was arrested in connection with threats against the mayor of Longueuil and other local elected officials over a plan to cull white-tailed deer in a city park.

Longueuil police say a man in his 20s from outside the city just south of Montreal was arrested on Tuesday and was released under conditions.

In recent days, threats have been made against Longueuil Mayor Sylvie Parent and others over a plan to capture and kill about half the roughly 30 white-tailed deer in Michel-Chartrand Park.

The plan has been met with fierce opposition, including an online petition and a protest on Saturday.
