UPDATE: ‘Vehicle of interest’ owner turns himself in to Kelowna RCMP following suspected fatal hit and run

UPDATE — RCMP have located the vehicle in question after a 55-year-old man from Woss turned himself into Kelowna RCMP on Sunday night.

Police said an investigation into the incident is continuing, however no charges have been laid.

“It has really been because of tips from the public received as a result of the media coverage that we have been able to locate this vehicle so quickly,” Cst. Jeff Pelat of Central Island Traffic Services said in a statement.

EARLIER: NANAIMO — RCMP have identified a vehicle of interest in a suspected hit and run.

A woman in her 20’s was killed in the early morning hours of Saturday, Oct. 10 when police believe she was hit by a truck.

The vehicle of interest is described as a 1991 brown Chevrolet Suburban, license plate PD9 29F. The vehicle was last spotted on the 5:15 p.m. ferry from Duke Point terminal on Saturday, sailing to Tsawwassen.

“We are asking anyone who may have information about the whereabouts of this vehicle and the driver, or may have been a witness to the incident on Oct. 9, 2020, to call (RCMP),” S/Sgt. Janelle Shoihet said in a statement.

The identity of the driver has not been made public.

The woman was found on the median of the four-lane Hwy. 19 between Parksville and Qualicum, near exit 51.

The discovery closed Hwy. 19 for most of the day, detouring traffic through the two communities along Hwy. 19A.

Police continue to investigate, led by Central Island Traffic Services and supported by collision analysts.
