NANAIMO — Island Health is leading the way during the COVID-19 pandemic.

No new cases were confirmed in the health authority Tuesday, with the province announcing 105 elsewhere in B.C.

It leaves Island Health unchanged at 206 total cases since the start of the pandemic, a fraction of the 9,013 confirmed across B.C.

Island Health has the lowest number of confirmed cases among B.C. health authorities.

The number of active cases decreased Tuesday with 1,268 people currently isolating or receiving treatment for the virus. Five are considered active in Island Health.

Data from Island Health shows of the active cases, one is in the central Island region including Nanaimo and Parksville. Two each are on southern and northern Vancouver Island.

Sixty-nine people are currently listed in hospital, 20 of whom are in intensive care.

One additional death was recorded by public health in the last 24 hours, a patient in the Fraser Health region. A total of 234 people, including six in Island Health, have passed away from COVID-19 during the pandemic.

In a statement, the province cautioned against travel for the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, a time which typically brings people together from different regions.

“We have had to change our special celebrations and gatherings to keep the people we care about safe. Rather than travelling to see friends or hosting a large family dinner, make it small this year and plan to connect virtually instead.”
